Spinal column - therapeutic local anaesthetics

A local anaesthetic, mostly Lidocaine or Carbostesin, is injected into irritated nerve roots, for example into the lumbar region. Therapeutic local anaesthetics are also employed in connection with performing a peridural, epidural or sacral anaesthesia. A further treatment technique is the Reischauer blockade, i.e. an injection in the proximity of the spinal nerves. This lowers the pain threshold and reduces the nerves’ swelling and is for example used when treating inflamed sciatic nerves. The sympathetic blockade is used for the algodystrophic syndrome (complex regional pain syndrome) in order to treat local circulatory disorders.
