Spinal decompression by SpineMED® intermittent dynamic distractions

The SpineMED® method helps patients suffering from lumbar, neck or sciatic pain.

It represents a gentle, non-operative, causal treatment alternative to surgery in the cervical and lumbar spine in order to improve the pain situation by traction of the spinal column segments and decompression of the constricted nerves. The system carries out intermittent dynamic distractions of the affected spinal column or intervertebral disc segment independently and computer-monitored via biofeedback.
In contrast to conventional stretching devices, biofeedback generally does not lead to any defensive tension. The tension is automatically adjusted every 20 milliseconds. As soon as the computer registers a counter-tension, the distraction is stopped and then slowly rebuilt.
By changing the angle of the pelvic support and the weight-adapted, individual tension strength, it is also possible to determine exactly how much force actually arrives in which movement segment (e.g. L4/5).
The traction force is gently increased and decreased in short intervals both within one and in the course of several sessions, whereby a basic tension is always maintained. You can observe the tractive force directly in front of you on the monitor.

This leads to a decrease of the internal pressure and contributes to a "recovery" of the intervertebral discs, which are not supplied with blood, "dry out" with increasing age and lose their "water core".  A dynamic "rolling through" helps to improve the metabolism and the rehydration of the water core. This is because liquids, nutrients and oxygen only enter the diseased tissue through diffusion.
Slight pulling or burning pains during therapy or slight dizziness during neck treatment are very rare and of a temporary nature - usually this is a slight muscle stretching stimulus.
In the case of some herniated discs, we were able to detect the decline and even the disappearance of disc sequesters by magnetic resonance imaging and avoid operations. However, a successful outcome here always depends on the individual case and is not predictable, sometimes also laborious or tedious. Therefore it can also require great patience and further or other measures.
In the case of severe nerve pain attacks, it cannot be ruled out in individual cases that a temporary worsening of the symptoms may initially occur if the irritated nerve experiences pressure from gravity or everyday stress after or despite the mechanical relief.

The effectiveness of the procedure has been confirmed in many studies.

Arthrotic spinal column changes, disc protrusions and herniations as well as secondary narrowing of the spinal canal (spinal stenosis) are the most common causes of degenerative back pain.
An increased pressure on the intervertebral discs slows down the body's ability to regenerate
and induce dehydration (loss of the water cushion function) of the intervertebral disc and degeneration of the adjacent vertebral joints.
Gentle stretching techniques and integrated biofeedback under the visual control of the patient, computer-controlled, promote the body's own regeneration by means of a
  • dynamically increasing traction of the spinal column to increase the intervertebral distance and decrease the internal pressure of the intervertebral discs.
  • Improvement of the metabolism: liquids, nutrients and oxygen get back into the diseased tissue through diffusion. The muscles and the surrounding connective tissue (fascia) are gently relaxed, better supplied with blood and nourished.
  •

  • Regeneration and repositioning of intervertebral disc tissue by rehydration from the environment (soaking up fluid)
  •

  • Segment-specific, gentle strain relief of the vertebral joints, so that the joint cartilage can recover.
  •

  • A selective treatment of the diseased spinal column section and segment specific decompression is ensured by an exact angle adjustment of the support.
  •

  • The traction forces are constantly and computer controlled individually adjusted.
  • What distinguishes the SpineMED® decompression from the classical extension treatment ?

A reflective defensive tension is avoided: By means of an integrated biofeedback system, tension changes in the spinal column muscles are visualised on a screen and, depending on the defence tension, the tractive force is automatically adjusted by sensors every 20 milliseconds. This means that the affected intervertebral spaces can be optimally expanded even with low tensile forces.
Since conventional stretching treatments do not work segment specific and without biofeedback, an involuntary painful defense tension often results, so that the affected intervertebral space is not stretched and the intervertebral disc pressure increases rather than decreases.

    Contraindications

The SpineMED® procedure should not be used in the following cases:
    • Spinal tumors or metastases
    • Pregnancy
    • Patients under 15 years of age
    • Severe osteoporosis with more than 45% bone loss or with fresh vertebral fractures
    • High-grade primary bony narrowing of the spinal canal (spinal stenosis)
    • Severe spinal instabilities/sliding vertebrae
    • Congenital malformations of the spine, spina bifida
    • Severe scoliosis
    • Infections or severe inflammation in the treatment section
    • Severe connective tissue diseases such as scleroderma
    • Fresh preliminary surgery on the spine
    • Compression fractures of the spine within one year
    • Implants in the treatment section

    Duration of treatment

Please schedule approx. 45 minutes per session with device setting and programming, dressing and undressing.
The pure traction and decompression time is 30 minutes.
Ideally, the treatment should take place in cures of 15-20 sessions, as from treatment to treatment a cumulative, positively reinforcing effect occurs.
A significant improvement of the symptoms usually occurs after 6-8 treatments.
This is mainly due to the continuous increase of the tension individually adjusted to you.

    Cost of treatment

The treatment costs are usually 70.68 € for a single treatment of the lumbar spine and 66.48 € for the cervical spine.
The SpineMED® therapy does not represent a statutory health insurance benefit. A reimbursement of the costs by the statutory health insurance is not possible. The amount of a reimbursement by a private health insurance depends among other things on the chosen insurance tariff and individually agreed conditions.
It cannot be guaranteed, since the SpineMED® procedure was not yet anchored in the 1996 scale of charges and is therefore settled via a series of similar "analogous billing figures".
The treatment costs for a treatment of the lumbar spine are usually 70.68 €, for the cervical spine 66.48 €.
For the SpineMED® treatment, the following medical fee is calculated in accordance with the scale of charges for physicians:
    GOÄ-fee   service description   factor   amount
538 (if used)   Infrared heat treatment, (lumbar spine only)   1,800    4,20 €
516 analog   Extension treatment with inclined bed   1,800    6,82 €
652 analog   Computer controlled, conservative spinal decompression   2,300   59,66 €
       Invoice amount (per single treatment):
       70,68 €

If you wish, you can download a declaration of consent and a cost estimate for SpineMED® therapy for your insurance company here.

For self-payers, we reduce the charges according to a lower fee scale (by about 20%).
